UPM Signs MoA with WNEC for Microalgae Industry Project

23 April, Kuala Lumpur- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with World New Energy Centre Sdn. Bhd. (WNEC) to collaborate on a microalgae industry project. Project coordinator, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Razif Harun from UPM's Faculty of Engineering, stated that the project involves microalgae cultivation, development of products based on microalgae, carbon cycle potential, and applications of microalgae in related industries.

Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Razif emphasized that this collaboration will contribute to expertise development and have a positive impact on commercializing microalgae technology. The project engages several Responsibility Centres (PTJ) at UPM including the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Institute of Bioscience (IBS), Faculty of Forestry and Environment (FHAS), and Faculty of Science.

Additionally, UPM has received an integrated system for microalgae cultivation with solar panels from WNEC at the SATREPS-COSMOS Demonstration Site in Farm 15, UPM's Faculty of Agriculture.

CT Tong, ESG Program & Circular Economy Concept Planner, mentioned that this collaboration aims to create sustainable cycles and generate carbon credits beneficial to the country. He also highlighted that through the Atoz carbon cycle platform, WNEC leads in revolutionizing sustainability by converting waste and carbon dioxide into clean energy and sustainable food sources.

The MoA document exchange was officiated by Associate Professor Dr. Khairulmazmi Ahmad, Director of UPM's Community Transformation Centre (UCTC), representing UPM, and Yumi Lee, Co-Founder and Director of Sustainability at Atoz Carbon Cycle Platform, representing WNEC.
