UPM-MSHR collaboration in improving the well-being of the Omadal community, Sabah

11 Jun 2023, Semporna- UPM and MSHR collaborated to support Pulau Omadal, a community in Semporna, Sabah, by implementing a program for the cultivation of seaweed and community health monitoring. The activities were carried out from June 7 to June 11, 2023, by UPM (Faculty of Agriculture, i-Aquas, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UCTC, CiRNeT) in partnership with MSHR.  They included data and sample collection to advance the seaweed industry and improve the well-being of the local community.

This 36-month program received special funding support from Yayasan Hasanah and the Ministry of Finance. This contribution ensures the smooth implementation and sustainability of the project, which brings benefits to the community of Pulau Omadal. Additionally, the program received support and cooperation from local agencies such as the Department of Fisheries, Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan of the Semporna District, WAPO, ISKUL, and the community of Pulau Omadal. This synergy strengthens collective efforts in achieving the project's goals and ensuring its success.

Through the data and sample collection carried out from 7th to 11th June 2023, UPM and MSHR gained valuable insights into the potential of seaweed in the area. The study, which involved water quality measurements, identification of seaweed species, and community health monitoring, is expected to provide guidance and recommendations for the improvement of the industry and community well-being.

UPM and MSHR's assistance to the Pulau Omadal community demonstrates their dedication to local social and economic development. This program has the potential to have beneficial effects and contribute to sustainable development for the community of Pulau Omadal and its adjacent areas through a partnership between the university, local agencies, the community, and industry.
